Ernie Chan who used to be Ernie Chua, changed it legally when he became a US citizen in 1976.

He was 20 when he begun doing comics in his native Philippines. He migrated to America when he turned 30 in 1970.

At DC Comics, he got the break doing mystery short stories then later got assigned to penciling Batman for two years. Ernie also did a lot of covers aside from working on other characters such as Claw, Sandman, Swampthing, Jonah Hex and others.

At Marvel Comics, he had worked on Dr. Strange, Dracula, Daredevil, Doc Savage, Thor, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Powerman and Iron Fist, King Kull, John Carter of Mars and others, but his longest stint on Conan is where he is best known.

Mr. Ernie Chan passed away May 16, 2012 after losing his battle with cancer.

Yes it is that time of year once again. The Bearman Cartoons Charity Challenge, where you do stuff and I donate money to worthy charities. I have been extremely fortunate that both my wife and I are gainfully employed during this tough economic times so I am upping the ante this year.

This is the Fourth Year I have done this so far donating $1656 ($336 in 2009, $630 in 2010, $690 in 2011) and it will run until the end of May.

Many of you know that I do this challenge each year to raise awareness of my blog while giving money to charities who need it. Historically, this has been the majority of my advertising budget for the year so if you enjoy Bearman Cartoons, please help by spreading the word on Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, etc and/or thumbing up on StumbleUpon or Reddit.

As in previous years, the first $500 raised will once again go to the Cincinnati FreeStore Foodbank. This charity does great things not only to feed those in need but also to help families get back on their feet in other ways. Anything donated above $500 to the max $1000 will go to support the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati. I have a relative with Down Syndrome and this organization does an incredible job working with the families of those afflicted.

But that is not all. Some of you know I donate 100% of my commissions directly to Crayons to Computers. It is a free store for teachers allowing them to stock up on school and art supplies for their students/classrooms. So I am going to match dollar for dollar anything you donate to Crayons to Computers up to a max $500. When donating just make it in Honor of Bearman Cartoons and they will know how to notify me.

I will donate the indicated amount for each thing that you do in the month of May:

$10 – For any cartoonists who uses ME in a cartoon in their strip. Use “BEARMAN” somewhere in the toon. Maybe it’s a character’s name, a name on a bar sign in the background, integrating my green haired gravatar into a background character or even loosely as “Check out that Bear, man!” Be sure to link back to this post so I know to include you in my tally. I know some of you work with a buffer so if you plan to post after May just contact me and let me know and I will add it to the list. $5 – Add http://beartoons.com to your blog roll (for those who don’t already have it) $5 – Add a Bearman Cartoons Banner Ad (found here) on your site or if you already have one upgrade to a larger size. Link it to http://beartoons.com $10 – Blog about my challenge to your readers and link back to this entry in your post – http://beartoons.com/2012/04/28/bearman-cartoons-charity-challenge-2012 $5 – Send a picture of yourself wearing a t-shirt from our shop OR send a picture that showcases that you are a BEARMANiac. Photos will be showcased in weekly updates and also appear ongoing in the BEARMANia section. See below for my favorite fan pic from Lynn. $1 – Circle/Follow me on Google Plus – http://googleplus.beartoons.com. Currently I have 13,218 followers.

If you add me to your blog roll, add/upgrade your banner, include this challenge in a post, please indicate in the comments. I’ll post a weekly update of the money raised and who did what to raise the money with links back to your site if applicable.

Thanks for your continued support.

The Power Of Love by Samuel Alexander

Miscommunication Lost in translation I don’t know what happened I can’t explain it All I know is you’re gone… just gone And I know somehow it’s my fault that we are no more Our line has been disconnected, our time is over and done With a simple phrase you decided to terminate, destroy, obliterate the music that is us How could I have been so stupid to have said… I cant remember what it took to make you say enough is enough but I fear this time it will be for good You wont come back like you usually would

I’m a fool, undateable, destructive, combustive Happiness glows and prospers only to explode in my presence Love grows and blossoms only for me to pluck it out at its roots My world turns black as I envision life without you I need you more than words can comprehend

As I sit on the beach and listen to the waves moving against the reefs I don’t find solace in nature

Why wont they call me? Why is my message box still empty? Don’t they now my life is incomplete without them? That my world doesn’t exist without them here to love me, hold me, comfort me How could they leave me alone sitting, waiting, knowing what it would do to me– don’t they care at all? Was what we had a lie?

As the tears begin to fall I rest my phone on a nearby rock, pull my knees into my chest and let the waves of emotion wash over and drown me to the symphony of the waves crashing amongst the shore I rock back and forth with the sound and let the tears drop as my body seems to be lifted and transported to a place of clarity A place where all emotions go when they need a place to hide and call home Where they can grow into a solid idea that takes you to a plain you never thought possible, that can hold more pain than you can store and transform it into something that even a child can comprehend I now have a vision and with this thought I begin to type After my last word is written I send it knowing I am still temporarily blocked–they wont immediately receive it.

I remove one shoe

I think of the smiles we shared… how just thinking of them warmed my heart That funny noise you made when eating The way you laughed at my jokes especially the bad ones

I remove my other shoe

I think of the conversations we had How you engaged my mind, made me a better man Helped me learn myself better as I grew together with you How in your eyes I knew I’d only find the truth

I removed my shirt

I remember how my being bipolar wasn’t an issue How you kept me grounded when by depression I was surrounded Knew when to ignore me from when to deal with my moods–that were usually dark yet still you gave me your heart All of you was mines as we travelled through the years together I released myself bare To you I was naked My soul in its most vulnerable and purist form and though psychologically damaged you supported me through it all You took my cold heart in your hands and massaged it back to warmth

I remove my pants

Your hand in mine kept me firm in reality Being in your arms was all that I needed to survive, to thrive, to make me value life–and even though you knew how low I was on the inside you persisted in giving me your strength, saving none for yourself In a sea fraught with peril you were my lighthouse… my rescue… my saviour… my help

I remove my boxers

I never knew how great love could be till you Never trusted anyone with my secrets but you Never dreamed I’d reveal my inner demons… my perceptions, evil visions, delusions that seem so real Never dreamed I’d give the darkness inside me, all that I am and let my tears be cried in your eyes… my heartache held in your pulse I became more than me I was transformed into a better being I became something much greater, from a me to an us… by your power of love lifted from the depths of the deepest well to swim in waters melded with my tears of pain and yours of hopes and dreams I could never thank you, repay you, or appreciate enough what you’ve done for me

I place my watch by my phone

I think of how hard it must’ve been to survive so long with someone as depressed as me To live in the dark caresses of my mind and survive To keep me afloat when I’d rather have died To not be destroyed by a misplaced word God some things I done, I said, how could I have been so stupid And now when I need you most you’re not here to save me Our wireless confrontation has left us with incomplete information, now lost forever because you have severed the connection Cut me loose with one phrase, “I can’t do this anymore,” and left me screaming, “Hello,” at the dial tone The warm salty air against my body takes me to that place again, where all emotions go

I place my folded clothes and shoes beside my watch and phone ignoring the light saying a message has been received

With each breath I take a step–feeling the sand on my feet… soft and soothing moving between my toes With each tear I inch closer to the waters start–each drop drowning further the sadness of my heart The water is warm and soothing to my skin, encouraging me to continue–so further I walk in To my knees, then my waist, then up to my chest, then into the deep I swim to where I can not stand The sky is so blue and the water so smooth The beach seems so small compared to when I was there I breathe the warm air and smell of the sea and think of the last words he said to me, “I can’t do this anymore,” and realise I cant do this to him Bring so much pain Shower their joy with my rain Force him to live in the shadows that encompass me and expect it not to weigh him down to the ground–to drown in my soul with hopes that one day he’ll be enough to make me whole Each day that he strives to heal my life slowly and surely who they are is dying Our love is stronger than all of creation Our love defies all rules of nature But at what cost comes my survival? Is another persons life for mine a worthy sacrifice?

As I wade in the ocean further out into the deep I question how much their love means to me… and how I would destroy him as he gives for me, to survive He gave everything for love and as more tears flood my eyes I realise that for love, for them to live, for him, I would die

So I submerge and enter the dark

Just an author trying to get his stuff out there. Nothing more to say there. That’s me in a nutshell. Read a lot watch tv a lot, procrastinate a lot, and try to squeeze in a little typing in-between. Written four books, only two are actually good and working on my fifth. Hmmm guess maybe there was more to this nutshell after all.

After a brush with the law that almost lands him in jail, Dana decides to move across the country to go to college, change his name, and start over. He doesn’t want the fact that he’s part of a mob family to influence his future-but that’s not all he’s worried about. His homosexuality has made him a target, and he desperately wants to find someone who understands him.

Dana finds work as a waiter and becomes friends with a group of regular customers. He isn’t sure he wants to trust them with his secret, but when he finds himself falling in love with the handsome Adrian, its no holds barred. Yet Dana’s secret past is about to catch up with him, and it forces Dana to face the inner demons he’s tried so hard to keep at bay. But this time, the man he loves is caught in the crossfire and suddenly, Dana has a lot more to lose …

A tale of self-discovery, Dana explores how the actions of our past can have consequences on our future, but also shows how true love can give us the healing we need.

http://addanaccity.com/wordpress/

I have been drawing ever since I was three years old (I’m in my mid-thirties now). Raised as an only child in a small rural town in south central Virginia, I had little choice other than to formulate my own entertainment. Mostly, I read a lot and I drew even more, using my imagination as an escape from the mundane.

I was that kid in school everyone said was gonna grow up and become an artist. I just knew that I liked doing it and that creating pictures came easy to me. I won plenty of school art awards (whenever I deigned to enter the competitions). I was inherently lazy back in those days, and sometimes I wouldn’t start my entry until the day before it was due. I liked drawing under the pressure of a deadline and, in some ways, I still do.

I was fortunate to get published in my hometown newspaper as a daily cartoonist at the tender age of twelve. I was given free reign to create three strips featuring whatever my tiny heart desired. Creative freedom as an adolescent? Heh…I loved that.

I worked continually for about two years making a three-panel strip, a super-hero strip (which was extremely violent in reflection), and a one-panel comic a la Family Circus. I stopped due to my increasing interest in girls and my feelings of suffocation that comes from having to draw when I didn’t necessarily feel like it.

In high school, I did everything art-related I could, from working on the school newspaper to helping design the numerous school proms. My teachers said I had potential, but my ego would be my biggest downfall. Me? An ego? What?

Future book jacket photo

I graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree in Visual Communication from Virginia State University in 1994. With that integral piece of paper in hand, I was ready to take over the world. Keep in mind, that was a year before those new things dubbed computers decided they weren’t a fad and were gonna be here to stay.

I have been employed as an artist in many companies. I have worked as a t-shirt screenprinter, a flag and banner designer, a ceramic pottery painter, a grocery store marketing specialist, an educational graphic consultant, and a movie store manager (my marketing and design skills benefited me greatly in that position).

Currently, I am working as a freelance graphic artist, creating everything from portraits, theatre playbills, and caricatures, to CD covers, textbook visuals, and building plans. I do it all and I love the challenges that come with each project.

My special love is reserved for a humble, lil’ webcomic I create called “Addanac City”. I have been publishing my webcomic on the internet since 2008, and the response has been wonderful. New readers come on board each day and they continue to revel in the idiotic adventures of my flagship character, Hank Addanac.

I post new strips Monday through Friday in full-color. I would love to be able to create Addanac City full-time but, until that time, I’m having loads of fun just interacting with the public and encountering other cartoonists whose passions cannot be extinguished for this growing art form.

I’m also taking art classes in video production and digital photography as a means of keeping my self up-to-date and relevant in my field. I’m learning more and more each day and I’m incorporating that knowledge into all facets of my life. I’m still ready to land the world on its ear no matter how long it’s taking me.

I currently reside in Southern California with my ever-so-kind-and-patient wife Traviett (whom I met on MySpace in 2006) and our two children. When I’m not creating, I’m usually thinking about creating. Or reading a good book.

Living in an environment like New York it’s nearly impossible to not be influenced by the city’s diverse creative energy and after a time I was inspired to explore my own creative nature. For the last 15 years I’ve been writing, creating poetry, and experimenting with various traditional and non-traditional visual art forms, including working with oils, acrylics, watercolors, pen, ink, and colored pencil. For much of that time the focus of my work has been directed toward the Art Card genre. I find the concept of ATC’s, ACEO’s and miniatures as a collectible art form very intriguing, however I do have larger and more complex pieces planned for future projects.

My series of works have included Cocktails, Portraits, Marilyn Monroe, and most recently Bettie Page. However, one of my favorites is the Abstract Geometry series, which was inspired by artists such as Piet Mondrian, Frank Lloyd Wright and Joan Miro. I have always been attracted to shapes, symmetry, and the relationship between random objects and lines that come together to form complex structures. I typically have no set idea before I begin an abstract piece. For me the creation the work is a meditative process and the creations seem to build themselves as I go, hence the term “Abstract” Geometry. This is an ongoing series and because of my affinity for it you’ll see obvious references to the styling throughout all of my work.
Each work of art, whether it be abstract, portrait, ACEO or larger, is a unique work of art created by me with the desire that it will bring enjoyment and a little magic to those who view and collect them. It is my hope that those who encounter my work will enjoy the view of the world through my eyes.

Self taught until the age of 20, she was accepted into the Museum of Fine Arts Academy in Houston. She continued studies in France and Holland. “Artists are mercurial. Our two greatest motivators are joy and pain. Emotion, perhaps more than visual stimulation, inspires my work. I want the canvas to speak of our awareness; be it pain, elation, humor, serenity, the surreal, speculation or happiness. Otherwise, it is nothing more than a piece of canvas with colorful brushstrokes.” Her work is immediately recognized by its strong composition and bold color. Having studied and practiced all genres of art, her own unique style is a blend of all her favorite aspects of each. Sometimes a simple brush stroke articulates a volume of emotion. Sometimes only the abstract can give voice to what she wants to say. Sometimes she must spend days on a detail. Her works hang in private homes and businesses throughout North and South America, Mexico and Europe, including governors in the U.S. and Mexico. She has produced special commissions for events such as the Ballunar Festival at NASA. Although her subjects and genre may change, she remains faithful to the traditional techniques. le Garder Oil on Canvas 30″ x 36″ Gallery Wrap 94 cm) Private Collection

Despite the absence of formal art education, few things were spared from serving as my canvas. Drawing became a childhood obsession turned into my lifelong passion. My specific love of sequential art birthed with the purchase of my first American comic book – Uncanny X-Men #271.

While attending college for a marketing degree, I continued to illustrate and design at every opportunity, serving as an editorial & sequential cartoonist and a commissioned artist. Holy War (my adaptation of The Holy War by John Bunyan, 1682), my first published comics ran in the university newspaper from 1992 to 1995. The serial earned an honorable mention for the Regional Collegiate Publishing Award, competing with publications from mega schools, such as Texas A&M and University of Texas.
After an eight year hiatus from comics, I picked up the drawing tools once again in 2002. Since then, my art has been published in several publications, including the cover to premiere issue of Comics NOW! magazine, and a 5-page Cipher story in Ape Entertainment’s FCBD book Cartoonpalooza #2. I am currently collaborating on Cipher: The Sorcerer Pope (previously called Ursula Wilde) with its writer & creator Steve Bryant. With the art chores completed for issue one, I am working dilligently to complete the remainder of the 3-part mini-series. A longtime resident of East Texas, I fight the daily battle to balance my passion for art with my family, a full-time job, and freelancing.

Nicholas Myers is an artist whose talents cover a wide spectrum, and I was hard pressed at picking my favorites from his galleries. So I decided to go with a theme that best showcases his imagination, simply titled CREATURES.

ABOUT NICHOLAS MYERS:
I am a stubborn idealist. I refuse to believe that we are better off in a society where we all claw at each other to try and make it to the top of some mythical mountain.

My philosophy would be closest to a possibilian.

I am conquering life.
I have 2 beautiful girls, a very patient wife and an attack Chihuahua named Fizzgig. I’ve published 1 312 page graphic novel called Oasis: Omnibus and a mini-series called Harijan and am currently working on a webcomic titled The Precarious Adventures of Newton Von Brisby.

I graduated from Kendall College of Art and Design with a degree in Visual Communication. I now work in the insurance industry. I am very passionate about my comics.

As a child with undiagnosed dyslexia, Willard Wigan was ridiculed in class by his primary school teachers for not learning to read. Wigan attributes his early drive in sculpting, begun at the age of five years, to his need to escape from being ridiculed by teachers and classmates. Wigan has since been on a quest to make even smaller artworks visible only through a microscope.

The subjects of Wigan’s works range from popular culture to architecture. The sculptor often refers in his work to other artists and historical events. Amongst his most famous pieces are a minute reproduction of Michelangelo’s David, carved out of a single grain of sand and a commissioned miniature version of the Lloyd’s building in London. Wigan has recently created a miniature sculpture representing the Obama family and has carved a statue of astronaut Buzz Aldrin in the eye of a needle, in celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the 1969 lunar landing. Other works include a microscopic Betty Boop and a copy of the FIFA World Cup trophy, both about 0.005 mm (0.0002 in) tall.

On average it takes Wigan about eight weeks to complete one sculpture in a process that is physically challenging. Because the works are so minute, the sculptor has learned to control his nervous system and breathing to ensure he does not make even the tiniest movement. Wigan, when working, enters a meditative state in which his heartbeat is slowed, allowing him to reduce any hand tremors and work between heartbeats.

To carve his figures, Wigan uses Swann-Morton surgical blades or hand-made tools, (some of which are custom made out of a sharpened microscopic sliver of Tungsten), which he makes by attaching a shard of diamond to a pin. The sculptures themselves are made of a wide range of materials. Wigan uses for instance nylon, grains of sand, dust fibres, gold and spider’s cobwebs, depending on the demands of the piece he is working on. To paint his creations, Wigan often uses a hair from a dead housefly, although he does not kill flies for his artistic processes.
